The best hotels in Syracuse Sicily

Syracuse was towards the end of my trip. It came after Catania and it was on my way to Fontane Bianche, one of the best beaches in Sicily. It sits on the southeast coast of Sicily and it is quite a historic town. When it came to looking at the best hotels in Syracuse, Sicily, there was a lot of history, which I will talk about a little bit below.

How we select the best hotels in Syracuse Sicily

So when it came to actually selecting the best hotels in Syracuse, Sicily, to stay at, we first of all spoke to our family who live in Italy. They have been to Syracuse before and stayed in some of these hotels. We also did a lot of research with our friends that we met up with there.

Location was really important. I think the best hotels in Syracuse were near the historic centre of the Ortigia Island part and also along the waterfront. We also looked at reviews, whether they had large rooms, good service, and the types of amenities they had.

As I mentioned, there is a lot of Greek and Baroque architecture, so we were looking for hotels that might have been in those older buildings but modernised. So maybe palace conversions or other old building conversions.

Luxury hotels in Syracuse Sicily

So we will start off with luxury hotels in Syracuse. There are actually quite a few 5 star hotels in Syracuse, Sicily. We were looking for really nice amenities, marble, technology, and those that might have had really good restaurants. So here are my recommendations.

Ortea Palace Hotel

You have got the Ortea Palace Hotel and this is a 5 star luxury hotel in Syracuse. What I loved about it is that it used to be the Syracuse Post Office and now is a modernised luxury hotel from 1920. It really has some fabulous amenities.

The gym is really modern and has exercise bikes, free weights, and rowing machines. They also have this fantastic indoor pool that has mosaics on the bottom, which is just so nice to swim in. Then they have a luxury spa where you can have couples massages, makeup treatments, and body scrubs. It really has everything you need in a luxury hotel in Syracuse, Sicily.

On top of that, they have 2 restaurants on site with nice views of the ocean. That is also where breakfast is served, and they have a wine bar. The Ortea Palace Hotel overlooks the Porto Piccolo, so you can see all the boats coming in and out of the harbour, which is quite nice to enjoy.

In terms of the rooms, they have quite a few to choose from and they are really modern and nice inside. I would probably pick a room with a view. Most of the rooms have a chair looking outside, which is just nice where you can read a book and enjoy the views. The bathrooms are all marble. The beds are huge, it is super white and modern, but yet you are in a 1920s post office. Really great to be part of.

Grand Hotel Des Ètrangers

Next up is the Grand Hotel Des Etrangers and this is another 5 star hotel. It is on the island of Ortigia and it used to be a historic mansion until 1906 when it was renovated into a hotel.

The highlight for this hotel I would probably say is the views. It is right on the water and they have this awesome infinity pool. Not massive, but fantastic views, and they have some lounges where you can just sit there the whole day so you can really relax in this hotel.

They also have a wellness spa on site where you can get a whole load of treatments. It is just so relaxing. I would also recommend going to their lounge bar which has really nice views of the ocean. A really good all rounder.

When it comes to the rooms, they have wooden flooring and all the beds are very big. Again, I would probably recommend the sea view rooms because you get that blue coastline. They also have marble bathrooms. One of the best luxury hotels in Syracuse, Sicily.

Wellness & Spa Hotel Principe di Fitalia

Next up is the Wellness and Spa Hotel Principe di Fitalia and this is on the south of Syracuse. Because of this it is very, very large. As an example, there is a huge pool. It is one of the region's largest hotels with one of the largest spas. They have 2 outdoor pools and actually 3 spas on site.

Other amenities include a complementary shuttle bus into town. I am not sure if it is still free, but that was a really good perk to get into town if you did not want to drive. They do have free parking if you do bring your car. On top of that, they also have a tennis court on site, a gym, and daily yoga and Pilates sessions. Wellness & Spa Hotel Principe di Fitalia is definitely one of the best hotels in Syracuse Sicily.

In terms of the rooms, there are actually only 37 rooms despite the size. You really get a feel for the Sicilian style in these rooms. Some have Jacuzzis in them, some have water views, and the beds are really, really comfortable.

Hotel Roma

Now, going back to the city, there is Hotel Roma, which is right next to Syracuse Cathedral. This is one of the best 4 star hotels in Syracuse, Sicily. This hotel actually dates back to 1880 and I love the pink facade, but also the rooms and dining areas.

There is a lot of exposed brick inside and the rooms are a little bit more traditional. They are fully furnished. You get to select from double rooms all the way up to suites. The rooms are large, they have air conditioning, and really nice bedding. Hotel Roma is one of the best luxury hotels in Syracuse Sicily.

Boutique hotels in Syracuse Sicily

Now I am going to talk a little bit about boutique hotels in Syracuse, Sicily. What I found is sometimes you just want more of a personalised service. So these kinds of hotels are great. They are usually a bit smaller with fewer rooms, so the staff can really give a lot of attention. They are also sometimes a little bit unique. So I will discuss some of the best hotels in Syracuse,, Sicily that might be that older boutique style.

Caportigia Boutique Hotel

First up you have got the Caportigia Boutique Hotel and this is actually one of the best 5 star hotels in Syracuse, Sicily. It is right next to Ortigia Island and it only has 14 rooms. That is what I like about boutique hotels in Syracuse, Sicily.

You can meet other people at breakfast and can sometimes make friends. When you stay here you will also get a really nice manager's reception, which is just so personable.

In terms of the rooms, they are super modern and some even have a terrace and a Jacuzzi. I would properly recommend at least getting the superior room because it has a lot of light inside. I really like the living stone walls in this hotel.

They also have the Il Tiranno restaurant, which is one of the best restaurants in Syracuse. I would recommend going for dinner or lunch there at least once.

Charme Hotel Henry's House

Next up is Charm Hotel Henry's House and I took a picture of this. This is one of my highlights and that was the garden area, which is set on the ocean with ocean views. It is just so nice. I would recommend going in the morning and then in the afternoon and having a sit out there and a cocktail.

In terms of this hotel, it faces the Gulf of Ortigia and there is a real classic Sicilian feel that has been renovated. It only has 14 rooms. Everything is just so light in Henry's House.

All the rooms are nice but I think the double rooms with the balcony are awesome because you can see all the landmarks in Syracuse. Or get the double room with an ocean view and let the light flood in. That one also has a curved brick wall. The beds are very, very comfortable. Only a small TV though, but you will spend most of your day doing other things to do in Syracuse.

They also have a rooftop terrace and a fireplace during the winter. If you drive to Syracuse, they have access to parking so you can ask them about that.

Palazzo Gilistro

Next up is Palazzo Gilistro and this is one of the best boutique hotels in Syracuse, Sicily, as it is a renovated palace, which I just love. What I have noticed is palaces seem to have really, really big rooms. This is in the centre of the island of Ortigia, right next to the Piazza Archimede, and it has got a real Baroque vibe to it.

In terms of the rooms, they all have balconies that face a piazza or they have ocean views. One of the rooms even has a pool table and Jacuzzi, so if you want to splash out on that, that is cool.

They also have a really nice Sicilian breakfast in the morning and lifts, which is hard to find in Sicily. The staff are very good and they can help you book things to do in Syracuse.

Best hotels in Syracuse Sicily for the family

And then there are the hotels in Syracuse, Sicily, for the family. You think about all the little things that make these hotels great, such as babysitting, larger rooms, connecting rooms, kids clubs, and pools. So I selected these hotels with these in mind.

Grand Hotel Ortigia

One of the best hotels in Syracuse, Sicily, for families is the Grand Hotel Ortigia. It is on the island of Ortigia and was built in the 19th century, however fully renovated in 1995. Why it is great for families is they have babysitting services, and not every hotel does, so this is a real plus.

The rooms range from singles all the way to triples, so you can fit a lot of people there. The rooms are quite traditional but sometimes that is more comfortable. The pillows and bedding are warm inside if you are going during the winter and the rooms are very large. You can also ask for a third bed or even a crib when you are travelling with a family.

For amenities, they have a panoramic terrace that looks out onto the ocean and all the boats. They have a spa where you can get treatments, but then they also have their own private beach. This is very hard to find in Syracuse and a real plus if you want to take the kids to the beach. This is one of the best 5 star hotels in Syracuse, Sicily, and also great for families.

Algila' Ortigia Charme Hotel

Next up is the Algila' Ortigia Charme Hotel and they also have babysitting services and cribs for the rooms. What I like about this hotel is also the rooms. They are very colourful and the furniture comes from Sicily, Spain, and Morocco, so a lot of thought has gone into the decor. The rooms are very, very large and feel quite homely.

For amenities, what I like is that they have an on-site restaurant so if you do not feel like going out, they have a really nice restaurant that you can take the family to. Last time I checked they also had free bicycles so you could ride around town. The town is not too big so you can walk around, but this is a plus. The hotel is also smoke free.

Grand Hotel Villa Politi

Now if you are wanting to stay a little bit more inland, just north of the city is the Grand Hotel Villa Politi. They have babysitting services and also cribs for the young ones. Because it is a little bit outside the city it is really, really large. This hotel has actually been around since 1862 and has really good service.

Other amenities include the pool, which is huge, so you can take the kids there. Something unique is that they do charge for pool towels but they donate 80% to charity, which I think is really nice, or you can just bring your own towel.

They also have a restaurant on site and I really like their lobby. Look how colourful it is. Because it is so large and a little bit north of town, they also have free parking if you are driving over.
