Top 10 best luxury hotels in Capri

Capri was one of my favourite Italian holidays. It had amazing ocean views and sunny skies, and I went at a good time. Capri has become very popular and has a lot of places to stay. When I was researching the best luxury hotels in Capri, there were quite a number of options, from 5-star hotels in Capri perched on the cliffs to smaller boutique stays. I will go into more detail in this blog.

Why visit Capri?

On my last trip I had a lot of time, coming from Naples, and Capri is really known for its crystal blue waters, its cliffs, and a lot of history. When I went there, I found there was a lot of fresh seafood. Because it has got popular, there is a lot of high end shopping. It also has a lot of natural wonders, like the Blue Grotto sea cave, so definitely check that out.

I went there because it was a bit of an escape from the mainland, which is usually a bit busier. You can still get boat tours, and you can set up base in the Amalfi and go visit Pompeii, Naples, and vice versa.

How to get to the island of Capri

There are quite a lot of ferries from the nearby mainland, but I came from Naples, and there is a Naples to Capri Ferry that runs from 7:55 am to 7:10 pm. Last time I did my research, the cost was between 27.50 euros and 35 euros. It takes just over an hour.

If you take the return, departing Capri to go back to Naples, it starts at 5:40 am to 7:55 pm. The prices were 22.50 euros to 30 euros, and it is about the same time.

What I loved is some of the best luxury hotels in Capri actually offered transfer services straight from the marina up to their hotel. Thas was a great service that I received.

How do we choose the best luxury Hotels in Capri?

We do a lot of research, and as you may know if you follow us, we have an Italian family, so they gave us a lot of recommendations on where to go in Capri. So we listened to a lot of other reviews. We take into consideration how comfortable the bedroom is. I think one of the most important things is the location.

The best luxury hotels in Capri that you want to stay at have to have ocean views, because that is why you go there, to relax and take in the ocean. That is what we look for quite a lot, as well as looking into the pictures of the rooms and speaking to our friends.

We also look at whether the hotel has an authentic restaurant and how good the service is. Also, whether they have their own private beach, which was something I was looking for as well. Those are some of the things that we look at.

Our best luxury hotels in Capri recommendations

1. Hotel Caesar Augustus

I will start with one of my favourites, Hotel Caesar Augustus. If you look at the picture, imagine that, just nothing in sight, just views for days. It is actually on a cliff edge, about 300 metres above the sea. This used to be a villa, but it is the views that stand out. The hotel has a panoramic view of the Bay of Naples and also the Amalfi Coast. You can also go from Amalfi to Capri in about 35 minutes, so it is pretty fast if you are staying in Amalfi.

They have only 49 rooms, which are really nice, and also six suites, so it is quite a small property and very intimate. What is awesome about it is that it has a double-level infinity pool. I did not want to spoil the picture, so I will let you have a look. They also have an amazing restaurant where they use ingredients from their own garden, so it is a small property, but they still have their own garden. It is one of the best 5-star hotels in Capri.

When we went there, you really get that feel of more of a private home, but with 5 star amenities. Maybe think of it as your in-laws' place in Italy. They also have a really nice infinity terrace and then a piano, where the staff will play at sunset, which is really a great place to be.

On top of that, they also have a wellness area, so an outdoor wellness centre where you can go for body treatments, and also a fitness terrace.

In terms of location, it is in Anacapri, which is more on the left-hand side of the island. It is close to the Monte Solaro Chairlift, and the Blue Grotto is just a 5-minute drive away.

2. Hotel Villa Brunella

Next up is Hotel Villa Brunella, very close to the scenic Via Tragara. This is one of the boutique 5-star hotels in Capri that is set on the hillside. Here you get views of Marina Piccola, which is on the south side of Capri. Many of the rooms have private sea-view balconies.

In terms of key benefits, all the rooms face the ocean, so you do not have to worry about picking the wrong room. In terms of decor, it is very modern, but you still get those hand-painted tile floors, which keep it cool, especially during the summer. It is very spacious, as you can see in the photo.

What I liked is that Villa Brunella also has in-room spa services. They can come to you and you can get physiotherapy massages and beauty treatments without even leaving your room. On top of that, in terms of amenities, they also have a panoramic pool, a restaurant, a cocktail bar, and a gym. I think having a gym is a must-have at the best luxury hotels in Capri, on top of the beauty treatments as well.

In terms of location, it is about a 20-minute walk from Marina Grande. Then a 12-minute walk from the Gardens of Augustus, so I think it is very well-rounded in terms of location, and you can still go and do lots of shopping here.

3. Hotel Scalinatella

Next up, and look at all that blue, that is Hotel Scalinatella. This is one of the well-known 5-star hotels in Capri, very close to Capri's famous Piazzetta. This is the most famous square on the island of Capri.

In terms of the rooms, there are stunning ocean views, and they also have 2 swimming pools, one of which you can see in the photo, overlooking Marina Piccola Bay, and also some gardens. In terms of the property, it is very well known by the locals, managed by Nicolino, Carmen, and Andrea Morgano. I think the service is really what makes this place, and it has earned top rankings in reviews about the best luxury hotels in Capri.

What a day at Hotel Scalinatella looks like:

My friends actually stayed there, and they told me waking up at the hotel is like being in a dream. You can enjoy breakfast in your room, the breakfast room, or even on a terrace overlooking the ocean. They stayed there for a few nights and said the panoramic views for breakfast were amazing.

Next, you can hit the gym, which I like to do as well because I am always eating so much at the buffet. You can head to one of the pools afterwards to relax after the gym, and they said even some of the rooms had a private pool, so you can go explore the rest of Capri and other things to do in Capri.

Then you can come home for lunch. They have a poolside restaurant where you can get some really nice Mediterranean dishes and fish, but it also has that ocean backdrop. In the afternoon, you can go to the terrace and watch the sunset.

From there, at 7 pm you can get a cocktail or champagne inside or even on the sea-view terrace, and by 8 pm the restaurant is back on, and you can have some really nice southern Italian food. That was a great review of this hotel from my friends.

4. Capri Tiberio Palace

Next up is the Capri Tiberio Palace. This is one of the best luxury hotels in Capri, and it has a blend of retro design and modern design, which really stood out to me. We actually stayed here, and the location was great. The decor was nice, and they had really nice service as well as some privacy.

Some of the key things I liked on top of that were the rooms, which were fantastic. They are all uniquely designed with different colours, inspired by the Mediterranean, with ocean views. Then there is the restaurant, Terrazza Tiberio, which had really good authentic food. But I think what really did it for me, as one of the best luxury hotels in Capri, is the spa. It has a 600 square metre spa, where they offer a number of different treatments.

In terms of room recommendations, if you really want to splurge on one of the best hotels in Capri, they have what they call the Dolce Vita Suite. It is a huge room with an outdoor terrace, which I love when I am booking hotels anywhere in the world, especially if they have an ocean or an island like Capri. The bed is king size, and they also have a sofa in the living room, so it is very spacious and you can just relax.

In terms of location, it is right in the centre of Capri, about a 5 minute walk from the Piazzetta, so it is very easy to get to from the ferry terminals as well.

5. Luxury Villa Excelsior Parco

Next on the list of the best luxury hotels in Capri, and if you look above at the picture, it is very unique, is the Luxury Villa Excelsior Parco. Here you get an Art Nouveau style, and it was actually built in 1906 on top of some Roman ruins.

It only has 11 rooms, so it is very, very boutique, and it easily counts among the luxury hotels in Capri Italy travellers rave about. Each room has luxury furnishings, ocean views, and private terraces. What I love about this hotel is that it is historic and really preserves the original Liberty-style architecture.

In terms of key things, it has to be the Deluxe 1906 Suite, which is the one in the photo. It has an ocean-view terrace and also an outdoor jacuzzi, so you can enjoy it even in autumn. On top of that, they have really good service and pay attention to breakfast. You can get organic, vegan, and gluten-free items, meaning it really caters to everyone.

In terms of activities, the staff are really friendly and can help organise cooking classes and helicopter tours around Capri, which I saw a few of when I was on holiday there, as well as yoga, which is quite nice when relaxing.

When it comes to location, it is very close to Marina Grande beach and also the ferries, so it is a very good location, and the piazza is about a 15-minute walk away.

6. Jumeirah Capri Palace

Now, if you are looking for something a little bit different, one of the best luxury hotels in Capri is the Jumeirah Capri Palace. I have put a picture above so you can get a feel for what it looks like.

Food

I think the standout would be the food. They have a Michelin-starred restaurant called L'Olivo, and they also have Japanese food on the rooftop for sunset views, so you do not even have to leave the hotel for some amazing food.

In terms of wellness, they actually have a beach club that has direct access to the blue grotto, without any of the other tourist lines, which is a fantastic spot. It is actually a medical spa, where you can get a lot of treatments, and they have what is called a thalassotherapy pool.

On top of that, they also have a gym, plus a leg school treatment that you can get, and what this does is a program that helps strengthen the capillaries, tissue rejuvenation, and circulation to enhance healthier legs. So if you are looking for some in-depth treatments, it is a great place to stay.

In terms of location, as I said, it is very close to the Blue Grotto and in the Anacapri area, so you will probably have to get a bicycle or take a transfer over to the main shopping area. This is also one of the best hotels in Capri that I would recommend.

7. Grand Hotel Quisisana

Next up on the list is the Grand Hotel Quisisana, which is very close to the Piazzetta square. There is lots and lots of marble, as you can see in the picture, and I think this place is the best for views of the Faraglioni rocks and also Marina Piccola beach, so you will be able to watch all the best places on this island.

Key Standouts

I think the standout is that they have a spa where you can get lots of massage treatments, a sauna, and pools, and they also have a really cool bar with a piano where you can relax and enjoy the food. In terms of the rooms, they are very modern, and the majority of them are really white in terms of decoration, which just looks amazing with the ocean and some of the greenery outside the windows.

In terms of my favourite room, as I said, being a big fan of ocean views, it has to be the junior suite with a sea view. It has blue and white tiles, little Capri style finishes, and a really big lounge area. My favourite part of that room was the terrace, where you can see the ocean and the park below.

In terms of distances, the Grand Hotel Quisisana is right in the centre, so it is very close to the piazza and the Gardens of Augustus, about a 5-minute walk away, so it is very well located, and it is worth shortlisting alongside the other 5 star hotels in Capri on this list.

8. J.K. Place Capri

Next up is a hotel that you just cannot get any closer to the ocean, so much so that I have got a picture where there is nothing there but the hotel and the ocean, and that is why it has made it onto the list of the best boutique hotels in Capri. That is JK Place Capri.

It is very quiet around here, and it makes you feel like you are in a private home rather than a fancy hotel.

What Makes This Place Special

I think what makes this place really special is the views, with those bright blue waters, a marina visible on the right hand side, and a Mediterranean breeze coming through the windows. They also have a really nice restaurant with fresh local food that you can enjoy while sitting on their huge terrace, as shown in the picture above.

Their wellness area is where the magic really happens, because being in such a peaceful place in Capri, you can really switch off from everything. They have a steam room and all sorts of different treatments that I had not had before, blending old Mediterranean secrets with modern spa techniques.

They use natural skincare products, which is a must-have when staying at any of the luxury hotels in Capri Italy is known for.

In terms of rooms, I think my favourite has to be the deluxe rooms. They have been done up in crisp navy blue and white colours that match the sea.

The room are spacious, about 28 to 38 square metres, so quite big, and every one of them has a private balcony so you can enjoy that fresh air. They also give you 2 really comfy deck chairs facing the water. You are going to love it.

In terms of location, the marina is about an 8-minute walk, and the Piazzetta di Capri is about 15 minutes when walking around Capri.

9. Punta Tragara

Next up are views, because, like I said, this blog on the best luxury hotels in Capri is all about the views, and what you can see in the picture above are the Faraglioni rocks at the Punta Tragara Hotel, which is one of the standout 5 star hotels in Capri. Imagine booking a place here.

The story behind this amazing place

In terms of the history behind it, it was actually designed by a famous architect called Le Corbusier in the 1920s, and he called the hotel an architectural blossom, because it literally grows right outside the rock.

In World War 2 it actually hosted Winston Churchill and General Eisenhower, and then in the 1970s it became one of the most exclusive luxury hotels in Capri, so it is definitely one of the more expensive ones, but amazing.

Punta Tragara wellness

In terms of the wellness area, it is also carved into the rock, and here they use vegan products, where they can create personalised treatments, so you do not have to go with what is on the actual leaflet. You can get high-tech face treatments and really unwind here.

Pool time and staying Active

If you want to stay a little more active, they also have 2 freshwater pools, one heated with massage jets. They also have a bar, so you can sip cocktails poolside and read a book, and if you want, they also have a gym with a lot of TechnoGym equipment, with views of the gardens, and you can also book personal training sessions.

My favorite room - The art suite

In terms of rooms, my favourite has to be the Art suite on the 5th floor, and it is like you are floating above the sea because it is built into the rocks. It also has a panoramic bathtub looking at the Faraglioni rocks, so it is an amazing room. They also have a roof terrace that makes you feel on top of the world.

In terms of location, it is right on the south of the island, about a 12 minute walk away from the Piazzetta di Capri.

10. La Palma Capri

I just kept learning more and more about the best luxury hotels in Capri, so we are still going, and this place is just known for its luxury and comfort, and that is La Palma Capri.

This was actually the island's very first hotel. It was built in 1822, and it has only 50 rooms, so you really get that boutique feel to it, and that service, making it one of the best hotels in Capri for history lovers.

Hungry?

If you are into your food, what really sets this apart from some of the other hotels, apart from being the first hotel in Capri, is it has a Michelin-starred chef, Gennaro Esposito.

There are 3 restaurants to choose from, and each is a little different, focused on fresh local ingredients. My friends stayed here, and they were talking about the aubergine parmigiana and even lobster pasta that they loved.

Pooltime

Some other things they mentioned are the pool deck, which overlooks Via Vittorio Emanuele, and their aqua bar, where you can get some really nice cocktails. Then, of course, there is their spa, the La Palma spa, where you can detox and just get that Capri glow with their signature treatments.

In terms of the rooms, my friends said they stayed at the junior suite, which has a really big king-sized bed and a sofa bed, and they said the best part of that room is direct access to the hotel pool, so you can literally roll out of bed and into the Capri paradise.

In terms of location, being the first hotel in Capri, it is right in the centre of Capri, so the piazza is just a couple of minutes away, and Marina Grande is a 10 minute walk away.

What are the best areas to stay in Capri?

Now I will talk a little more about some of the best areas to stay in Capri, so you can get a feel for where some of the best hotels in Capri are located across these different areas.

Capri Town

I think this is for those wanting to be near all the shopping and also the nightlife. Capri is a little quieter, though it does get a bit busy some months; but if you want to be central and around all the things to do, Capri Town is where you want to stay, right in the centre of the island.

Anacapri

Next up, you have Anacapri, which is where I stayed. Anacapri is on the left-hand side of the island, and I would say it is a little quieter, and if you are looking for a more authentic atmosphere, it is also located on the higher slopes. With this you get some really great views, and it is usually a little less touristy. That said, all the restaurants are closer to Capri Town.

Marina Grande

Then you have Marina Grande, which is on the north side of Capri near the ferry, so you get really great access to the harbour, the boat tours, and also a lot of the beaches.

You also have Marina Piccola, which is on the south, so make sure to get that right, on the south coast. Again there are a lot of beautiful beaches, and this is where you get views of the Faraglioni rocks.

How long should you stay in Capri?

If you are looking at how long to actually stay in Capri, I will give you some ideas from my personal experience and also my friends.

For a quick taste, you can do a day trip, like I said, from Amalfi over to Capri, which only takes about 30 minutes. So a day trip is doable, and you can hit the big stuff like the Blue Grotto and the Piazzetta, but you just have to coordinate the ferry time, so read up about that above.

But to really experience Capri, you need at least 2 to 3 days, so you can wander around Capri Town, check out Anacapri, chill out on the beaches, and even take a boat trip around the island. Plus, when the day crowds leave, you can really feel the more authentic experience of Capri.

If you want to really escape and enjoy luxury, going to all the treatments, I would say go for at least 4 days when going to Capri. You can really take your time, get a lot of treatments done at the hotels and spas, check out the beach clubs, and also check out all the restaurants, since the luxury hotels in Capri Italy offers are made for slowing down.

Transport options to Capri Centre

In terms of transport options, like I said, Capri is a small island, but depending on where you stay, it might still take a long time to get around.

They have really compact buses that navigate Capri's roads, and it is a very convenient option from Marina Grande to Capri Town.

If you want to pop over to the beaches and do not have a rental car, they have open-top taxis, which are quite cool, or if you are staying at some of the best hotels in Capri, they may have a shuttle bus.

And then, like I said a little earlier, you have walking, but something to note is that going from Marina Grande to Capri Town has an uphill climb, and also Anacapri, so it can be challenging, especially during the peak summer periods.

The best months to visit Capri

In terms of the best months to actually visit Capri, I will talk that through based on my experience and my friends' experience.

Spring (May and early June)

You have spring, like May and June, which is a really great time to go. The weather is very warm, and it is a little less crowded than the peak summer season. You get blooming flowers, which are amazing when walking around the island, and the sea temperatures are still good for swimming, so it is a great time for a holiday in Capri.

Summer (July and August)

Then you have summer, so July and August, which is peak tourist season and really hot, so if you like the sun it is a great time to go. It is a little more vibrant, and sometimes some of the restaurants close during the quieter winter periods and shoulder seasons.

In summer, you get more atmosphere, which is sometimes what you want when going for dinner. But you will get higher prices, and maybe some longer waits, and the sea is at its warmest around then.

Autumn (September and early October)

Then you have autumn. A lot of my friends swear by September and early October, when you still get warm oceans, but start to get fewer crowds, so the atmosphere is a little more relaxed, and the prices for hotels end up being a little less too.
