When I went to Ponza last time, I wanted to go there because I had initially travelled to Capri, which is very close to Naples. That was on an earlier trip, but on my latest trip I wanted to go to Ponza instead. I had always seen it in pictures and in films, and you will probably recognise it too, because of all the different coloured homes, with that pastel painting on the port.

It also has the most incredible beaches and coastline, so go and visit if you can. The cliffs were really nice too. I wanted to go there because I knew it was very relaxing, and I wrote this blog about the best hotels in Ponza, Italy, because there are not actually that many places to stay.

How we selected these hotels in Ponza

First of all, our family is Italian, and we have family very close to Rome. They had been to Ponza a couple of times because they had friends there, so we first spoke to them about the best hotels in Ponza, Italy. They recommended places near the ocean and near the ferry.

Then we started to do our own research, looking at the location, which I think matters quite a lot, because it is a big island and there is only one ferry port. There is also no plane to get in. We also looked at other guest reviews and feedback for families, couples and solo travellers.

We checked how close each place was to the port, whether they had a wide selection of rooms, and whether they were great for families.

Where to stay in Ponza

There are a few different areas that my family recommended for the best hotels in Ponza, Italy.

Le Forna area

You have the Le Forna area, which is on the north side of the island, not all the way north but quite high up towards the centre. This is where you get some really incredible sunsets if you are staying around here. If you look out to the west side with the sunset, you will see the island of Palmarola, which is a very rocky island and quite cool to see in the evening.

Le Forna is where you are probably going to find most of the relaxing hotels in Ponza, Italy. It is a ten-minute drive into town, but there are still restaurants around this side of the island, and you can either take a scooter, a taxi, or walk around the north side. If you want to get to the port, it will take about ten minutes in the car.

There is a beach called Cala Feola beach, which is really nice to relax around that area. The area itself gets its name from the old quarries, where the entrances of these quarries resembled small ovens, and that is where you get the name forna, since forna means oven in Italian. So it is a really nice place to stay on the north of Ponza.

Best for: Couples seeking romance, photographers, and travellers who prioritise natural beauty over nightlife

Ponza Port area

Then you have the Ponza Porto area, and this is really where you want to stay if you just want more of that buzz in the air. You get a lot more restaurants in Ponza port, a lot more shops to go to, ferry connections & also the Botanical Gardens of Ponza. I would probably advise staying around here if you are spending a few days in Ponza and checking out the different islands around, or if you are only staying for a night or two, since you will not have to travel around with all your luggage.

Ponza is also really known as a fishing town, so you are going to get fresh fish straight at the restaurants if you want to eat. When you are staying at the hotels in Ponza, Italy, in this area, you are also going to be part of that colourful housing that you see in pictures of Ponza.

Best for: First-time visitors, families with teenagers, and travellers who prefer convenience and activity

Now I will get onto the best hotels in ponza italy.

Hotel Ortensia

I will start off with one of my favourites, and that is Hotel Ortensia, which is in Le Forna. It is a little bit quieter, but what I really loved about this place was the views. I have got a picture of one of the hotel rooms looking outside, and imagine waking up to that view most days, it is just incredible.

With some of the rooms, you are also able to get sunset views from private terraces, and I really liked the hospitality here. Some of the key benefits are the sunset views over Palmarola Island, and the hotel is also family-run, so the service is really good. There is a rocky beach called La Caletta that you can walk to, or you can go to Cala Feola Beach, which is sandy, so you do not have to worry about that.

Around this area, you will also see natural pools and coves, because of all the volcanic activity from the past. In terms of wellness, there are a lot of spots on the hotel terraces where you could do yoga or have an aperitivo, and because it is so close to the ocean you get that lovely ocean breeze.

Favourite room at Hotel Ortensia

Most of the rooms actually have an ocean view, so make sure you pick one, but my favourite is the double room with the sea view and also a balcony.

You cannot really see it in the picture, but it is a small balcony where you can relax outside. The flooring is stone, so it stays cool during the summer, and then in the winter, they do have air conditioning in this room to warm it up. It is a big double bed, but honestly, the views are really what do it for me on this one.

They do also have other rooms if you are with family, including family rooms that have a large deck outside with some beds, which is pretty cool.

Location of Hotel Ortensia

In terms of the location, as I said, it is in the north, in Le Forna, about a ten- to fifteen-minute drive, where they do have buses, but you can also get a taxi.

Hotel Villaggio dei Pescatori

Another really good hotel in Ponza, Italy, is Hotel Villaggio del Pescatori, which is actually in Cala Feola Bay, so that sandy beach I was talking about. The location is really, really good for this hotel. The hotel's name itself means fisherman's village, and it reflects its connection to Ponza itself.

It is also very close to the piscine naturali, which are basically natural pools that you can walk over to, so I would definitely advise going there no matter which hotel you stay in.

Hotel Villaggio dei Pescatori key benefits

Some of the key benefits of this hotel are that you are so close to Cala Feola Beach and the pools. They also have a free transfer service from the port, so that means you do not have to faff around getting a rental car or a rental scooter, which I think is a really good thing.

They also have their own restaurant called La Terrazza, where you dine outside with views of the ocean, and if you do end up getting a car, they do have private parking too.

Hotel Villaggio dei Pescatori favourite room

In terms of my favourite room, I would get the terrace double room at a minimum. Big open windows mean you can just see ocean in front of where you are sleeping.

The bed itself is a double, and it is very clean. On the actual terrace itself, you can sit and relax with ocean views. If you are with a family, they also have a quadruple room that has ocean views and a terrace.

In terms of the location, again, it is in the Le Forna area, very close to Cala Feola Beach, and they also have that free transfer to the port, which is pretty good.

Hotel Torre dei Borboni

Next on my list of the best hotels in Ponza, Italy is Hotel Torre dei Borboni. This is actually a hotel that was once an eighteenth-century fortress, so there is a bit of history with this one, since it was built in the eighteenth century to protect the island from pirates. In terms of the location, it is very close to the port, so it is a great place to stay if you are only here for a few days.

I also picked this one because it is one of the only hotels that actually has a pool, and it has three hundred and sixty degree views of the island, so it is a great spot to get lots of pictures around Ponza.

Key benefits of Hotel Torre dei Borboni

I think some of the key things about this hotel are the pool, since sometimes you do not always want to head over to the beach. I also think breakfast and lunch are really good, since you get ocean views while you eat and can watch all the boats going by, and the location is so close to all the shops and some of the restaurants in Ponza.

Favourite room at Hotel Torre dei Borboni

In terms of my favourite room, I really like the suite with the ocean views. It is a very big room, at least thirty square metres, and it is very modern inside compared to some of the other hotels in Ponza, Italy, while still keeping that Italian style, very white as well. From the inside, you would not feel that it is a historic building, but from the outside, you can. They also hold weddings there, so it is a very well-done hotel.

Tips for booking hotels in Ponza

Here are a few tips on booking hotels in Ponza, Italy. The ones I have put in this blog are probably the most popular hotels in Ponza, and the peak season is around July and August. Because they are so popular, I would probably recommend booking really early, about six months in advance at least if you can.

Going during spring and early autumn tends to save a bit of money, but you still have to book ahead of time. I would also recommend looking at the ferry services and how to get to Ponza beforehand as well.

In terms of the hotels in ponza italy ranking, I think the number one hotel has to be Hotel Torre dei Borboni, because it has that luxury feel and all the ocean views.
