The Best Hotels in Palermo

Palermo was my last stop before flying to mainland Italy. So finding one of the best hotels in Palermo really mattered to me. We had been staying at a lot of bed and breakfasts and other hotels around Sicily and had saved up a bit more to stay somewhere really good. Hopefully you will find somewhere in Palermo in this guide.

How we select the best hotels in Palermo

When we were looking for hotels in Palermo, we actually spoke to our family. As you might know, a lot of our family live in the south of Italy. What they told us was that if you wanted to be near all the attractions, like the Norman Palace, you have to stay in the centre.

That is what we were focusing on. But there were also a few beach hotels in Palermo to consider. So apart from family recommendations, we also looked at other reviews, checking for amenities and service. We were also looking for history.

Palermo being a very historic town, we were looking for old palaces converted into luxury places, or chic boutique hotels in Palermo, Sicily. We also looked for those with rooftop terraces or panoramic views of Palermo's domes.

Luxury hotels in Palermo

Like I said, we had saved up our money for a luxury stay. There are only a small number of 5-star hotels in Palermo. You tend to find large rooms, really nice bedding, access to more pillows, which I personally love, and well-appointed bathrooms. Here are my top picks.

Rocco Forte Villa Igiea

I think number one has to be Rocco Forte Villa Igia. This is just north of the city centre, right on the water. It is one of the best 5 star hotels in Palermo and a member of the historic hotels of the world.

What I love is all the different amenities. They have a pool, a spa, a tennis court and a gym. But what I like most is their own private dock. From there you can take cruises on their villa boat, which is a really unique thing to do hosted by the hotel.

They also have a really nice bar called the Igiea Terrace bar. I would recommend coming here when the sun is setting for an aperitivo.

The rooms are the biggest standout though. What you see here was just a standard room but absolute luxury. You have carpet flooring, a really modern room, and the bedding was just so comfortable. This is probably the best hotel in Palermo overall.

The Grand Hotel et Des Palmes

Next up is the Grand Hotel et Des Palmes. This is another 5 star hotel in Palermo right in the centre. The hotel was built in 1874 and has an art nouveau design. You can just about see in the pictures the frescoed ceilings and the original Liberty style windows.

The rooms are really luxurious again. They have Egyptian cotton sheets, memory foam beds which you do not find often, and really nice bathrooms with rainfall showers and designer toiletries. They also have a gym, a spa and a restaurant.

The Grand Hotel Wagner

I have actually been to Palermo twice. The second time I stayed at the Grand Hotel Wagner. This is one of the best hotels in Palermo city centre and great value as well.

It is a really historic hotel, and you could feel that. The service was great from the moment we walked in. We got a really warm welcome. They also have parking facilities, which is really handy.

The rooms had those lovely warm greens, were very large, and the bedding was just so nice to sleep on. Some rooms have really nice views of the city, and even the lower-priced rooms have marble bathrooms.

On top of that there is a swimming pool, a spa and a gym. Definitely one of the best hotels in Palermo.

Boutique hotels in Palermo Sicily

The boutique hotels in Palermo Sicily tended to be a bit smaller with limited rooms. But what I love is that the staff at boutique hotels are usually very attentive. Things like knowing your name when you check in. They go the extra mile to make you feel really welcome. Here are my top picks.

Palazzo Natoli Boutique Hotel

This is a 4-star hotel in Palermo with only 12 rooms. But inside the rooms are huge. You can see the king-sized bed in the picture, and everything is really well furnished with great attention to detail.

The owner Floriana, is actually an architect who specialises in interior design and the restoration of historical heritage. You can really see that in her hotel.

She maintains everything herself so every little thing was just perfect at the Palazzo Natoli Boutique Hotel.

Palazzo Brunaccini Boutique Hotel

If you are looking for something a little more modern right in the centre of town, there is the Palazzo Brunaccini Boutique Hotel. This actually belonged to Princess Lucrezia Brunaccini. It is a 17 room hotel and very close to the Ballarò market and other attractions in Palermo.

The rooms are very modern. You have a couch, a four poster bed, and it just looks so warm and inviting. One of the best hotels in Palermo if you are after something boutique.

The top beach hotels in Palermo Sicily

If you are looking for beach hotels in Palermo Sicily, then you have to look around Mondello. I would probably recommend renting a car to get between Mondello and the city centre. Here are my top picks.

Domia Boutique Hotel E Cucina

My first recommendation for a beach hotel is the Domia Boutique Hotel E Cucina. This is literally on Mondello Beach. If you do not feel like going to the beach one day, they have a heated swimming pool with lounges. Because it is not very big, it is very quiet, which I loved about this boutique hotel in Palermo.

The rooms are all really nice. I would probably start with the double deluxe with a balcony, which is a huge room. They are all very renovated and come with a TV.

The bathrooms are lovely and the terrace has a really nice view with a couple of chairs to relax in. If you want something more premium, there are executive rooms with a jacuzzi or rooms with a large terrace.

Unico boutique hotel d'arte

If you are looking for views, one of the best beach hotels in Palermo Sicily is the Unico Boutique Hotel d'Arte. It has an amazing terrace that looks out over the whole ocean. There is also an outdoor pool with a garden area where you can sit and have a cocktail, plus some lovely lounges.

For the rooms I would probably recommend the deluxe, which has a really nice bed. If you are working, there is a small table, and there is a bath right next to the window so you can enjoy the ocean views. Or there is a junior suite with a balcony where you can sit outside and really feel the breeze from the ocean. One of my favourite recommendations.

Hotels in Palermo for families

Sometimes you forget about all the little things that make a hotel great for a family. Things like lifts, babysitting services, cribs, and just good service. Here are my recommendations.

Massimo Plaza

This is a 4 star hotel in Palermo. The main draw for families is the babysitting services, which can be really hard to find in another country.

There are also little extras like bicycle rentals so you can take the kids out, and really fast laundry services. If you are travelling all around Sicily like we did, that is perfect. You do not need to lug around even more luggage than you already have.

The rooms are very well presented, a little more traditional in design but very comfortable. If you are bringing a car they have parking and they also have a beach shuttle. So you can take the kids for a full day at the beach.

Hotel Porta Felice

If you are travelling as a family and want a bit more in the way of spa services, there is Hotel Porto Felice. This is one of the best hotels in Palermo for a family.

It is a wellness hotel with lots of different room types including singles, doubles, triple rooms and family size rooms.

They also have babysitting services, sound-insulated rooms, and a wellness spa to relax in. There is also a lift, which is one of those things you really appreciate with kids, not dragging them up the stairs.

NH Palermo

If you want a hotel in Palermo with a pool for the family, the NH Palermo is a really nice option. It has views of the Gulf of Palermo and was recently renovated.

A lot of the rooms are family size, all suites, or have connecting rooms, which is great if you have older kids you want nearby. The pool in the picture is very nice, and they keep it really clean.

If you do not want to go out to eat, they have their own Sicilian restaurant on site. The NH Palermo also has dry cleaning services. You can also browse our Palermo restaurant guide for nights you do want to eat out.

Cheap hotels in Palermo Italy

We did have a look at some of the lower-cost, cheap hotels in Palermo, Italy, as well. This is a good option for those who want to save a bit of money while still on their Sicilian tour. When I was looking at these, I focused on the basics: WiFi, a bathroom, maybe a free breakfast.

Hotel Politeama

I think the best hotel in Palermo for value is probably the Hotel Politeama. This is a 4-star property right in the city centre. They have everything you need, including a 24/7 reception and laundry services.

The rooms are all very modern but well-priced. You can get single rooms or deluxe balcony rooms, and you can see in the pictures that they are very well modernised with a TV and a nice big bed.

If you get the terrace rooms, they have a really good view of the whole of Palermo. They also have WiFi, air con and even soundproof windows, which is a great thing to have in the centre of Palermo.

Ibis Styles Palermo President

If you want to be by the harbour, I would probably recommend the Ibis Styles Palermo Presidente. This is a 4 star hotel in Palermo. The rooms are very modern and colourful with air con and WiFi throughout.

You are seated right by the harbour and can choose a room with a harbour view. They also have free on site parking which saves you money on a car park.

If you do not want to leave, they have a rooftop terrace, a bar and an Italian restaurant. What I really liked about the Ibis is the breakfast. It is served on floor 7 and has a great view of the port.

Very conveniently located and you will be very close to the Politeama Garibaldi Theatre.
